Stuff that fits the CBR400 NC29 v1.1.2 060120

Early NC23 on left with NC29 head NC36 engine right.

Intro

This blog entry is to list and share what will fit the CBR400RR-L NC29. I have mostly collated it for cross compatibility of NC23 parts as such I will also have a list on parts that do not fit from this machine. I will also list items such as fuel pumps that will fit from other models but clearly aim not going to tell you that an AUDI A4 door does or does not fit, because that would be silly. It doesn't by the way, you can have that one.
I will update this periodically as I find things that do or do not fit and update the version number as I go. All of the latest updates will be in red.

Engine Stuff:

Engine code: NC23E102xxx CBR400RR NC23 1988
Too far forward & low
Different upper mount
The engine is not a straight bolt in. The spacing is substantially different at the rear with the rear barrel mount missing. The case rear upper mount is too high and aft so it fowls the water tank before far enough aft.
Front lower mount might actually line up once engine is far enough back to get the rear lower mount in (impossible without major modification to the engine).
Cooling is also different on the NC23 with the input at the back of the barrels (which are a separate part to the cases on the NC23) so you would need to run different cooling hoses for this engine to work.
The engine I have has NC29 heads fitted so the spacing for the carbs is the same, standard NC23 carbs have different spacing. Some of the wiring is different too but that could be different as this engine has been messed about with.

What is interchangeable:
  • Timing/starter cover.
  • Timing sensor (female plug)
  • Starter and timing gears look the same.
  • Starter (unconfirmed).
  • Flywheel (same dimensions and markings not run).
  • Generator fits in flywheel, wiring different
  • Heads interchangeable (not done myself but clearly done here).
  • Water pump same mounting as other NC23E engines with different ports.

Engine code: NC23E112xxx CB400 CB-1 NC36 1990
The engine is not a straight bolt in. The spacing is substantially different at the rear with the rear barrel mount missing. Rear upper mount is too high and aft so it fowls the water tank before far enough aft. Very similar to NC23E102xxx and has clearly been used in this machine so I would say that it can be fitted to an NC23 (although I haven't seen it in one).

What is interchangeable:

  • Timing/starter cover. (Was fitted to NC23E102xxx engine)
  • Timing sensor (plug not checked)
  • Starter and timing gears look the same.
  • Water pump same mounting as all other NC23E engines but plumbing different again.
  • Starter motor (unconfirmed).

    Stuff that will fit Chassis:

    CBR400NC23
    • Tail light -It looks the same as the NSR250 MC21/28 too.
    CBR400RR-R NC29
    • Forks - Add rebound and compression adjustable cartridge forks with little fuss.

    Stuff that doesn't fit:

    CBR400NC23
    • Fuel tank - The later tank might fit if you cut the lower fairing tabs off, I didn't go any further with it.
